Minister of Industry and Trade Nihat Ergun stated that a big country like Turkey cannot be satisfied by just manufacturing and doing assembly work. “We need to create our own designs, models and trademarks and move towards areas that generate high added value in the industry.” he said.

Ergun who spoke at the 63rd Annual General Assembly and International Conference of the International Institute of Welding which is taking place in Istanbul and which is organized by the Gedik Education and Social Benefits Foundation (GEV) and Turkish Welding Technologies Academy (TKTA), said that developments in other areas of industry were being realized by the help of developments in the welding technologies for the most part.

Ergun emphasized that welding technology has an important place in the formation of global economy. He mentioned that Turkey is a country which has a continuously growing economy and which is becoming industrialized, values welding technology very much.

Ergun mentioned that Turkey has a very successful welding sector and that this is seen very clearly in the assembly. “For instance, we are one of the best countries in the world in the area of assembly with nearly 50 years of experience that we have in the automotive sector. There has never been an important complaint concerning automobilles that have been manufactured in Turkey and the companies which manufacture in Turkey, do so without any mistakes. This is why many global companies choose our country as their center for manufacturing.

As Turkey reaches a stronger industrial structure, our welding sector is going to gain strength in the same way. Turkey is going to protect its structure that manufactures around the world. However, it is not going to be satisfied with it. Because a big country like Turkey cannot be satisfied by just manufacturing and doing assembly work. We need to create our own designs, models and trademarks and move towards areas that generate high added value in the industry. When we develop our own designs, our perfection in the welding sector is going to stand out a lot more.

“OUR MANUFACTURERS SHOULD NOTIFY US ABOUT PRODUCTS THEY SEE THAT ARE NON-STANDARD.”

Nihat Ergun emphasized that economy of Turkey had left its structural problems behind since 2002 and that Turkey succeeded in enlarging its economy by nearly 5% in the last 7 years.

Ergun who emphasized that while many developed countries came out of the global crisis with serious damages, Turkey has managed to come out of the same crisis without a lasting damage. “Turkey is amongst the countries that began to make up for its losses the earliest and the fastest.” he said.

He pointed out that manufacturers should report products they see that are non-standard. “ Our manufacturers should be helpful to the public about raising awareness of users. If we can cooperate in this area, we will both protect your work and also respond to quality and safety expectations of our consumers.” he said.

EFFORTS CONCERNING A JOINT ORGANIZED INDUSTRIAL ZONE WITH IRAN

Ergun who responded to the questions of members of the press after his speech responded to a question concerning whether incentives for the industrial zone which is planned to be established were determined or not in the following way:

“Technical efforts on this issue are continuing. In what area will it be made? Four of them will not be done at the same time. Efforts are for 4 zones in the border area. In a way that encompasses both the Turkish and the Iranian sides. If we can make the provision of energy, electricity and natural gas to that area possible, then, there will be the possibility of forming a very competitive industrial zone in the most eastern part of Turkey and in the most western part of Iran. It will become possible to form a competitive zone in terms of both world markets and domestic markets of Turkey and Iran, to create employment in the area, to create a new atmosphere and create an atmosphere that can affect even other countries and neighboring countries as well. But, it is early to tell at this time how the incentive systems in this area will be in the future. Our goal is to create a manufacturing center in the area. We also may form places that countries like Azerbaijan and Georgia maybe even Syria and Iraq can participate in later years.
